Know More
Everything you need to know before joining our community of compassionate changemakers.
Snehi welcomes individuals from diverse educational, professional, and cultural backgrounds who are interested in contributing to the field of mental health. While some roles may benefit from a background in psychology or related fields, many opportunities are open to anyone with a genuine interest in listening, supporting others, and engaging meaningfully with the community. We value qualities such as empathy, commitment, openness to learning, and a willingness to work within ethical guidelines.
The role of a volunteer at Snehi varies depending on the programme they are associated with. Volunteers may contribute to mental health awareness initiatives, community outreach, research and documentation, event support, or programme-specific activities. For those engaged with the helpline or counselling-related programmes, responsibilities may include supporting individuals in distress under supervision, following structured training. Each role is purposeful, with clearly defined expectations and guidance from the respective programme teams.
Volunteering with Snehi offers an opportunity to engage deeply with the mental health space while contributing to meaningful social impact. Volunteers gain exposure to real-world mental health work, develop skills such as active listening, empathy, and communication, and learn within a supportive and reflective environment. With over three decades of experience, Snehi provides a credible and enriching platform to grow personally while making a difference. You also gain a community of like-minded people and a supportive safe space.
You can express your interest through our website, email, or referral networks. Once we receive an enquiry, our team reviews your background, interests, and availability, and shares relevant volunteer opportunities that align with your profile. Based on your preference, your details are forwarded to the respective programme team. Each programme follows its own selection process, which may include interactions or specific screening steps depending on the role — ensuring volunteers are meaningfully matched and well-suited to their chosen area.
From its beginnings in Delhi, Snehi has grown into a national community of volunteers spread across India, connected through a shared commitment to mental health. Today, our volunteers come from different regions of the country, contributing in diverse ways through both in-person and remote engagement. Over time, several of our volunteers have moved abroad and continue to remain connected with Snehi, supporting our work and carrying forward its spirit in different parts of the world.
Testimonials
It was indeed a great experience to associate with Snehi & represent the Disha helpline. The calls made me look deeper within me as a human, woman & as a counsellor. It taught me patience, empathy, more wisdom & my boundaries & limitations as a tele counsellor. My interactions with the callers left me with both sweet & bitter experiences. Some calls were completely delightful and I would remember the engagement throughout my life. Whereas some inappropriate calls & manipulative callers left me feeling used & quite helpless.
In future, I would definitely like to serve as a counsellor with more insights, tools & skills to handle the calls & callers in a more effective manner.
Thank you, Abdul Sir, Chandra Sir, Prabhakar Sir, & all facilitators for valuable inputs into the training and being there for us all through.
Last but not the least, Lokeshwari for giving us backup support at all times, taking care of us, checking on us & guiding us to execute our slots more effectively.
Love you all🌷
My journey as a volunteer of the Disha helpline of Snehi has been a very insightful and fulfilling experience. An important learning has been counselling is not about giving solutions, it’s about compassionate, non-judgemental, active listening. It helps others at the same time it gives an opportunity for self-awareness and self-growth as well. The training was rightly divided into 2 phases.
The first phase beautifully gave theoretical concepts of counselling skills, child development, importance of awareness of our own emotions & self-compassion, impact of education system, peer pressure, social media and screen addiction on mental health of students. The role plays done in the session gave hands on training of counselling.
The second phase was actual counselling. I highly appreciate the continuous guidance, gentle support, and humility of Abdul sir, Chandra sir, Prabhakar sir. The weekly discussion meetings were a great platform of learning from each other and guidance by seniors. The google form filling helped in looking back into every case in a systematic way.
The concern of our own emotional wellbeing was always taken care of by all seniors at Snehi and Lokeshwari ‘s warm concern after every call ….”Are u ok'” is commendable. By volunteering I realized certain factors which lead to mental distress in students, especially peer pressure, expectations from parents and self-image, fear of failure, relationship breakup, not being in touch with nature, lack of sharing of feelings, not relaxing in between studies. The initiative of Disha helpline by Snehi is needed by the students of the present time. I deeply appreciate the genuine care, warmth and concern by all of you. The humility which is so rare these days, I find in Snehi. The beautiful balance between hand holding n guidance and freedom given by the Snehi team is highly appreciable.
Listening to counselees patiently has given me calmness and acceptance of life situations and understanding of other’s value systems as well. The transformation in the mind state of counselee from helplessness to hopefulness in several sessions has given me a feeling of contentment and peace. I had this great realization that what matters is a resilient mental attitude which helps us in overcoming the challenges being faced in life. Compassionate listening and without being judgemental becomes a rope which helps the counselee to deal with the life situation. Another important aspect I realized is the significance of the tool of self-compassion which helps in healing of mental trauma. I have been practising mindfulness and self-compassion for the past 5 years and am still moving on this path. As it was mentioned in one of the discussion meetings that we can have some way which can help in healing ourselves. I feel blessed to be a volunteer. Other than volunteering, I can be with Snehi in taking sessions on mindfulness and self-compassion. Looking forward to a lifelong association with the Snehi team.
Volunteering with Snehi is more than giving your time — it’s joining a movement that has touched thousands of lives.
